SAWADA Hideo

Sculptor

SAWADA Hideo

SAWADA Hideo is a sculptor based in Saitama, Japan. His works are often ‘small’ and ‘simple’, which are both important features of his creation.

He intentionally makes his sculpture small and light, and also keeps the texture of woods on its surface. Those aspects give the viewers the temptation of touching and handing his works. He aims to create sculptures that can fit into each viewer’s personal space, and provide a feeling of closeness to art. That is also the reason why he makes his works relatively affordable.

In addition, Sawada always keeps his sculpture simple and not detailed. The simple form allows the viewers to interact with the work and imagine freely depending on their mood.

He seeks the simple form by intentionally breaking and deforming the shape that he has made. This process is to find the best balance between himself and the character of each material. The appearance made by the breaking process motivates him to carve a unique image for each piece. At the same time, he takes care of the given shapes and textures to keep the form simple and plain. Sawada thinks that creating simple forms with less manipulation will bring out the hidden character and power of each object, which he aims to give the viewers through the experience of his artwork.
